Taking Breaks for Learning

Railing, B.

Prior research has shown that taking breaks during lecture time improves student focus and learning.  Students also benefit from regular and diverse practice and feedback. This talk will describe how I have integrated low-stakes quizzes into lecture as part of the break time.  These formative assessments take less than 5 minutes and provide immediate feedback to students on their learning. This feedback also comes back to the instructor as to which concepts require additional review during the lecture time.  I will my workflow from identifying the concept to test, preparing quiz questions using Canvas, delivering the quiz, and then responding to the results.
